The government is not involved in this. Nursery schools are private initiatives. The salaries of the nurseryteachers are paid by the fees they raise.

When President Kibaki came to office in January 2003 he declared primary education free. This resulted in an enormous rush to public schools. Classes of 100-120 children were no exception. The lack of teachers is chronicle.
Example: Vingujini has 1200 pupils and 11 teachers. The teachers and a limited number of textbooks are provided by the government.
The schoolyear runs parallel to the calenderyear with 3 months school – 1 month holiday. Meaning that in April, August and December schools are closed.
The National Education board hands out mid-term and end-term tests. The scores are registered on Provincial level which makes results per school, subject and teacher visible.
The curriculum excits of five subjects: English, Kiswahili, Maths, Science and Social Studies. For each subject you can score 100 marks.
The primary school is terminated by an exam, the KCPE (Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education).
The mean score of an average public school in Msambweni area is 230-320 out of 500. Due to financial incompentence of the parents for the majority of the children education stops here.
Besides the financial (im)possibilities of the parents determines the KCPE score which of the 3 levels of high school a child can enter.
Local – Provincial or National. The chance that a pupil of a public rural school did reach a score high enough for a National High School is practically zero. Local or Provincial High Schools are the highest achievable alternatives. These schools do not cater for universities. Due to the lack of a big enough missing middle class, unfortunately most children who finish Local or Provincial remain unemployed.
After 4 years there is the KCSE (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education).
Twiga sponsors only children who have National School abilities.

The country has only a few universities.
Together with the enrollment for the KCSE exam the pupil gives his list of 5 preferences of university faculties.
